Rutger published: Who Controls the Media Controls Politics: GLAAD's Sarah Kate Ellis on Navigating Media Challenges

With the prospect of Donald Trump ascending to the presidency again, Sarah Kate Ellis, the president and CEO of the LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization GLAAD, is paying close attention to the American media landscape. Ellis emphasizes the power dynamics at play: "Who controls the media controls politics," she notes, a fact that becomes increasingly concerning when considering how major social media platforms have allowed anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech and misinformation to proliferate unchecked.

Elon Musk, after acquiring Twitter (now X), has transformed it into a channel amplifying right-wing rhetoric. Meanwhile, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has relaxed Facebook’s hate speech guidelines and curbed content moderation, citing perceived bias in fact-checking as a justification. Ellis finds these moves alarming, arguing, "The notion that fact-checking is biased and holding people accountable is offensive at its core. The American public deserves truth and factual reporting."

The Importance of Truth in Storytelling

As the leader of GLAAD for over a decade, Ellis has been instrumental in not only monitoring media content but also promoting cultural change in LGBTQ+ representation. She works with media outlets and politicians to ensure that the stories told humanize queer individuals and accurately reflect their experiences. "The media landscape is evolving," Ellis observes, "and we must scrutinize the algorithms that often promote division over honesty."

Anti-LGBTQ+ narratives have gained traction, with right-wing rhetoric increasingly labeling LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies as "groomers." Such harmful discourse has contributed to a decline in support for marriage equality and nondiscrimination protections, despite an increasing number of Americans identifying as LGBTQ+.

Political Challenges and Advocacy

Ellis warns of the potential rollback of LGBTQ+ rights under a second Trump administration. During his previous term, Trump enacted numerous policies detrimental to LGBTQ+ communities, and he has promised further measures aimed at expanding religious-based discrimination and dismantling diversity initiatives. These policies are often justified by misinformation, blaming LGBTQ+ inclusion for various societal issues.

GLAAD combats these narratives with education and advocacy, utilizing influential voices to push for greater LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. Ellis highlights the power of personal stories in changing public perceptions, noting that when people get to know the stories of LGBTQ+ individuals, it fosters understanding and acceptance.

Changing Hearts Through Stories

Ellis stresses the importance of storytelling in bridging divides. "There's nothing more powerful than storytelling," she asserts, emphasizing that media portrayals of queer lives are crucial in breaking down stereotypes and fostering empathy. By highlighting the everyday lives of LGBTQ+ individuals, GLAAD seeks to counteract the dehumanizing narratives prevalent in right-wing discourse.

One promising avenue is highlighting the reality of gender-affirming care, which is often misunderstood. Ellis points out that cisgender individuals frequently make gender-affirming choices through cosmetics and clothing, yet these practices receive far less scrutiny than those involving transgender people.

The Role of Allyship and Advocacy

GLAAD's efforts extend beyond media representation; they also work to influence policies and cultural perceptions at high levels. The organization collaborates with advertising leaders, social media platforms, and policymakers to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion and combat harmful rhetoric.

Ellis believes that everyone, regardless of their platform, can contribute to a more inclusive society. "Everyone has a voice," she says, "and it is vital to amplify LGBTQ+ voices and stories." By doing so, ordinary individuals can play a crucial role in supporting the rights and dignity of the most marginalized within the LGBTQ+ community.

As the battle for equality continues, Ellis remains steadfast in her belief that storytelling and truth are powerful tools in advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and combating discrimination. Through relentless advocacy and strategic storytelling, GLAAD seeks to ensure that LGBTQ+ individuals are seen, heard, and respected in all facets of society.
