Celebration and Visibility for Trans Athletes in Las Vegas

The community project "Kicking Out Transphobia" is still buzzing with positivity after a successful tournament outing. This atmosphere of joy and achievement is a much-needed boost for trans athletes and the transgender community, who often face challenges and adversities elsewhere.

Recently, "Team Trans-tastic," a team from the project, participated in the Sin City Classic in Las Vegas. They returned home with bronze medals and a trophy, marking a significant achievement. However, the real victory lies in the new friendships formed and the powerful message that trans athletes sent just before anti-trans executive actions were announced in the United States.

At the award ceremony, captains Aaron Wixson and Shakira Madrigal shone with pride. They both played pivotal roles in organizing the team, as praised by Yunio Martinez, the founder of Kicking Out Transphobia.

Aaron Wixson, who usually plays for the San Diego Sparks, an LGBTQ-focused club, was eager to join the tournament in Las Vegas. Despite a language barrier, Aaron found playing on an all-trans team to be an incredibly supportive experience. "Playing with people like you, who support and understand you, is amazing," he shared.

Kicking Out Transphobia began as a charity event in Philadelphia in 2022, featuring its first all-trans match at the Sin City Classic the following year. This was in collaboration with the International Gay and Lesbian Football Association (IGLFA). Yunio Martinez also serves as IGLFA's Director of Diversity.

A Statement of Resilience and Unity

The formation of "Team Trans-Tastic" for the tournament was a first for the organization. In addition to securing third place, the team had the honor of winning the Best Goalkeeper award. Aaron was also recognized with the Julia Zuniga Award for Fair Play, named after a trans soccer player tragically lost in Mexico.

Aaron's leadership and visibility have been critical. A former U.S. Marine, Aaron made headlines in 2016 for sharing his transition story. "Visibility is crucial now more than ever," he emphasized. "Every young person should see themselves in their sports heroes." He continued, "Trans people have every right to participate in sports at any level. We deserve the chance to excel, make mistakes, and enjoy every aspect of the game without judgment."

For co-captain Shakira Madrigal, being part of "Team Trans-tastic" was life-changing. Coming from Leon, Mexico, soccer has played a transformative role in her life. After a serendipitous invitation to a local tournament, Shakira found her calling in sports. "That night changed my life," she reflected, "it helped me see how acceptance can bridge communities."

Shakira is proud of the impact her involvement in soccer has had, helping other trans girls move away from negative influences and fostering acceptance within the broader community. "Thanks to football, these girls gained respect and visibility," she stated, grateful for the support that enabled her participation in the Sin City Classic.

Continuing the Journey of Inclusion

Through social media, Kicking Out Transphobia has kept the uplifting spirit alive post-tournament. They are planning a seven-a-side tournament in Mexico City to coincide with Trans Day of Visibility in March. Aaron, back in California, expressed his hope for the project's growth. Yunio's dedication is steering KOT towards the 2026 Men's World Cup, aiming to inspire change and acceptance.

With FIFA partnering with IGLFA, new opportunities for LGBTQ inclusivity in sports are on the horizon. Regardless of these developments, Kicking Out Transphobia remains committed to creating a gender-diverse and joyful sports environment.

"To all trans youth facing today’s challenges: You are seen and valued," Yunio wrote. "Better days are ahead. One day, we’ll all celebrate like Team Trans-Tastic!"
