Trans activist Leo Aces has strongly criticized the "toxic transphobia and ableism" faced by a young transgender teenager with cerebral palsy (CP) whom he mentors. This comes after the teenager, named Micah Leroy, courageously shared his transition journey online, only to be met with vitriolic responses from anti-trans and right-wing individuals.
Micah Leroy, a trans teenager living with CP, posted a video earlier this month announcing his progress in his transition. His video quickly went viral, drawing both support and unwarranted criticism. In the video, Leroy happily shares, "Hey, I am almost a month post-op (in two days). Feeling really good, no more binders. Yay!" Despite the positive nature of his message, the video was inundated with negativity.
Leo Aces, who also experiences CP, expressed his dismay to the media, highlighting that the backlash Leroy received was deeply disturbing. Aces, a well-known disability awareness speaker and podcast host, has previously featured Leroy on his podcast, where they discussed similar issues.
Leo Aces shares a personal perspective, stating, "As an activist and awareness speaker who is a trans man living with cerebral palsy, I am horrified by the reaction Micah’s video has incited." He notes that the timing of Leroy's post coincided unfortunately with recent changes in social media policies and political events, which may have amplified the backlash. "I believe the timing of his post, coinciding with changes in social media and political tensions, led to a toxic storm of transphobia and ableism," Aces remarked.
Recent shifts in social media policy, particularly the emphasis on "free speech" over fact-checking, have been noted as contributing factors. These changes were announced in the wake of political developments, further complicating the online landscape for marginalized voices.
Aces points out that Micah’s video serves as a catalyst for a broader dialogue about the intersections of physical disability and gender identity. "The visibility of physical disability and gender identity often attracts controversy due to systemic beliefs that disabled people lack agency," he explains.
Reflecting on his own experiences, Aces shares, "There have been many times in my life where I feel perceived more as a commodity than as an autonomous individual. This attitude permeates my daily life." He discusses the prejudices faced in relation to his gender identity, noting instances where people question why he would "choose" to be openly transgender given the challenges of living with CP. "In reality," Aces asserts, "we haven’t ‘chosen’ to be trans any more than we ‘chose’ to be disabled."
Aces expresses unwavering support for Micah Leroy, praising his bravery in sharing his transition journey. "I stand wholeheartedly by Micah for sharing his transition," Aces declares, "and hope that his courageous act encourages other disabled trans and non-binary individuals." He emphasizes the importance of visibility and support for marginalized communities, stressing that sharing personal stories can foster understanding and acceptance.
Cerebral palsy, which affects movement and coordination, can develop before, during, or shortly after birth. Despite some individuals with CP having intellectual disabilities, many, like Aces and Leroy, do not experience cognitive impairments, further highlighting the diversity within this group.
