Emilia Pérez, a bold Spanish-language film directed by Jacques Audiard, has sparked intense discussion and differing opinions since its release. The movie, which has been both applauded during the 2025 award season and sharply criticized in some online communities, features trans actress Karla Sofia Gascón in the lead role.
In this gripping musical crime thriller, Gascón portrays Emilia Pérez, a notorious former Mexican cartel leader. Seeking a new life, Emilia fakes her own death with the help of lawyer Rita, played by Zoe Saldaña, to undergo gender-affirming surgery. In doing so, she leaves behind her spouse Jessi, portrayed by Selena Gomez, and their two children, only to re-emerge in their lives under the guise of a family relative.
While the film has garnered praise, it has also faced critique from segments of the LGBTQ+ community. Some critics argue that Emilia Pérez places undue emphasis on surgery as central to the trans experience. Others point out that the film could perpetuate negative stereotypes about trans individuals being violent or abandoning their families.
In response to these criticisms, Gascón made her stance clear in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. She expressed frustration with the ease at which people critique complex works from the comfort of their homes, often guided by simplistic or uninformed perspectives.
"I’m tired of TikTokers, Instagrammers, influencers, and people who wake up and suddenly consider themselves experts," Gascón remarked. "Criticizing the work of hundreds of people from your couch is a disservice to the artistry and effort involved."
Gascón, who is being considered for a Best Actress nomination at the upcoming Oscars, emphasized that social media does not always reflect the broader societal reception of a film. "Social media is a facade," she asserted. "True feedback comes from personal interactions on the street, where people express their appreciation directly."
She noted the significant impact the film has had on audiences, with many eagerly anticipating her potential Oscar nod. "There’s something remarkable happening within society," she said. "Many people are ready to celebrate if I receive an award, which shows the film's positive influence."
Gascón also highlighted her role in refining the film’s portrayal of trans experiences. Originally, the script depicted Emilia’s transition as a means to escape law enforcement, with her character's sexual orientation being altered post-transition. Thanks to Gascón’s input, the final version of the film portrays Emilia finding love with a woman, played by Adriana Paz, which offers a more nuanced and authentic representation.
Despite the internal critiques, Emilia Pérez and Gascón have faced hostility from anti-LGBTQ+ factions as well. Gascón revealed that she has received disturbing threats, including graphic messages threatening violence against her. "I've learned to cope with such threats," she shared. "They fuel my resolve to stand proud and let those who support love and acceptance know they have triumphed."
Gascón's defiant response to hate underscores her resilience and commitment to her craft and identity. "The more hate is directed toward me, the more I find joy in my achievements," Gascón declared. "I choose to focus on the positivity and the joy my work brings to others."
As Emilia Pérez continues to stream on Netflix, the film invites viewers to engage with its complex narratives and performances, fostering dialogue and reflection within and beyond the LGBTQ+ community.
