Nick Clark never imagined that he would find himself coaching the Wolverines at the University of Michigan, a team he grew up cheering for. Yet, here he is, in Ann Arbor, just a short drive from his hometown of Carleton, making his mark as an assistant coach for the women’s volleyball team.
Reflecting on his journey, Clark shared, "I never thought I’d coach at Michigan, the school I grew up cheering for." In his second season, the team made significant improvements, climbing the Big Ten standings to 10th place and achieving an 18-13 record, a stark improvement from the previous season.
With a promising group of freshmen and sophomores, the team is setting their sights on breaking into the Top 25 in future seasons. The last time Michigan reached the NCAA tournament was in 2021, where they faced a first-round exit against Ball State.
Clark brings a wealth of experience to his role. Before joining Michigan, he served as an assistant coach at several prestigious institutions, including Harvard University, UC-Santa Barbara, and more. His journey in volleyball began while playing men’s club volleyball at Eastern Michigan University.
Clark’s journey is notable not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his personal growth and openness about his identity. Alongside him through much of his career has been his husband, Rob. The pair, both Michigan natives, met in 2010 at a gay bar in metro Detroit and married in 2017.
Clark has been openly gay throughout his coaching career, finding inspiration and courage from platforms and communities that celebrate LGBTQ+ identities in sports. His story offers hope and visibility to others in the sports world, showcasing that being true to oneself is a path to success and fulfillment.
"I remember when I was a young closeted gay man, I realized I wasn’t alone," Clark expressed. Volleyball, a sport often associated with women, has become a welcoming space for many gay men. Clark notes the presence of several openly gay coaches and players within the sport, contributing to a supportive environment.
Reflecting on his journey, Clark draws inspiration from a beloved childhood film, citing a poignant moment from Aladdin. "Be yourself," the Genie advises Aladdin, a mantra that Clark has embraced throughout his life and career.
As Clark continues to guide the Michigan volleyball team, the community looks forward to witnessing his achievements. His story is not just about athletic success but about the courage to live authentically and inspire others to do the same.
For those interested in following Clark’s journey, he is active on social media, sharing insights and updates about his life and career. His story is a reminder of the power of embracing one's identity and the impact of representation in sports.
Nick Clark's journey is a testament to the possibilities that open up when one is true to oneself, both on and off the court. The volleyball court is not just a place of competition for him, but a platform to inspire and lead by example.
We await with anticipation what Clark will achieve next at Michigan and beyond, as he continues to break barriers, coach with authenticity, and inspire the next generation of athletes.
