Rutger published: New Queer Jazz Night to Debut in London's Thriving Music Scene

London is poised to experience an exciting addition to its vibrant music scene with the debut of a monthly queer jazz night. This new event, set to launch in February, aims to celebrate and nurture the unique voices of LGBTQ+ musicians within the realm of jazz, a genre known for its improvisational spirit and fusion of cultural influences.

The monthly event will take place at the renowned Vortex Jazz Club in Dalston, a venue that has a rich history of hosting groundbreaking music performances. The initiative, spearheaded by DJ and music journalist Tina Edwards alongside award-winning musician Arowah, is their bold step towards creating a dedicated space for queer artists to flourish and connect with audiences.

"It has been a journey of persistence and passion to reach this milestone," said Arowah, reflecting on the efforts to carve out a niche for queer jazz artists. "Finally, we have an opportunity to shine a spotlight on this incredible community, fostering its growth while sharing its vibrant energy with the wider public."

The co-founders are enthusiastic about the potential of this platform to not only showcase talent but also to build and strengthen the community of queer jazz aficionados and performers. "Our aim is to be a springboard for queer talent across the UK and Europe," Edwards added. "With the support from Arts Council England, we have the privilege to offer a venue where artists can expand their reach and engage more deeply with fans."

The inaugural event will feature a variety of artists, illustrating the diversity and richness of the queer jazz scene. Moroccan singer-songwriter Queen Kaltoum and Norfolk-based singer Maya Law will kick off the evening, promising a fusion of styles and sounds that reflect the eclectic nature of queer jazz.

Future performances are set to include acts from the likes of Jessica Lauren, the innovative Swiss band Knobil, and the dynamic ensemble Peng Femme Jam. Each show will bring its own flavor, ensuring that audiences are treated to a fresh and inspiring experience every month.

Tickets for the opening night on 5 February are already available, and music lovers are encouraged to arrive early as doors open at 7.45 pm, with the live music commencing shortly after. The Vortex Jazz Club, located at 11 Gillett Square in London’s N16, provides an intimate setting that is perfect for immersing oneself in the emotive performances that jazz is known for.

This initiative is more than just a series of concerts; it is a celebration of identity and creativity, a testament to the power of community in the arts. By providing a dedicated space for queer jazz artists, Edwards and Arowah are opening doors for new collaborations and creative explorations that will undoubtedly enrich London's cultural landscape.
