A mother's unease arose when she learned that her daughter’s co-ed college accommodation included a transgender individual serving as a resident assistant. Cheryl Saltzman, whose daughter is a student at Utah State University (USU), expressed feeling "deeply unsettled" by this revelation regarding the living arrangements.
Saltzman shared her concerns with the Cache Valley Daily, stating, "There was no effort made to ensure the comfort of students with this arrangement. I’m disappointed that the university does not prioritize the privacy of women and girls in their living spaces." Her daughter, who was residing in Merill Hall, a mixed-gender residence hall that features apartment-style living with private bathrooms, three bedrooms, and a shared living area, decided to relocate before the next term.
The role of a resident assistant in university housing is typically to provide guidance and support to students, acting as a peer leader and offering mental health resources when needed. Despite not sharing an apartment block with the transgender resident assistant, Saltzman’s daughter opted to move to a different residence hall.
Saltzman commented on her choice of university, saying, "We chose USU because it seemed like a more conservative, safer option. I was truly surprised to learn that a transgender individual was part of the large co-ed housing complex."
The university's housing department responded promptly to accommodate Saltzman and her daughter's request for a new dormitory. In a statement, they expressed their commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where all students can succeed, regardless of their background or personal beliefs.
A spokesperson for USU housing explained the hiring process for resident assistants, noting that the individual in question was selected through the same application and interview process as other candidates. "All new employees, including the resident assistant, undergo a background check," the spokesperson added.
Federal and state laws prevent asking students or potential employees about their transgender status, as these questions could lead to gender-based discrimination. "We aim to create a respectful, inclusive environment, and our policies reflect that."
The university is reviewing its current policies and practices to ensure they align with the needs of all students. "Our primary focus is student success, and we strive to support all students in achieving their educational goals," the spokesperson said.
This incident has sparked a broader conversation about privacy, safety, and inclusion in mixed-gender college housing. While some parents and students express concerns about privacy, others highlight the importance of diversity and the benefits of living in a community that reflects a variety of identities and experiences.
The university reiterated its commitment to providing a safe, welcoming space for every student. "Our objective is to support all students in thriving academically and socially," said the spokesperson. By offering diverse living arrangements, the university hopes to prepare students for the diverse world beyond their academic experience.
The dialogue surrounding this issue underscores the ongoing challenge educational institutions face in balancing diverse needs and viewpoints. As discussions continue, the university remains dedicated to listening to student and parent concerns while maintaining its nondiscrimination policies.
Feedback and community engagement are encouraged as the university evaluates its approach. Students and parents are invited to share their thoughts, with an emphasis on maintaining a respectful and open dialogue.
