Renowned for his unforgettable role in The White Lotus, Leo Woodall is set to showcase his acting prowess once again as he steps into the shoes of a brilliant queer mathematician in the upcoming Apple TV+ thriller, Prime Target.
Woodall, a British actor celebrated for his dynamic range, will headline the series as Edward Brook, a Cambridge postgraduate and mathematical genius. His character embarks on a gripping journey of intrigue, joining forces with non-binary star Quintessa Swindell, best known for their role in Trinkets.
Originating from the creative mind of Steve Thompson, renowned for his work on Sherlock and Doctor Who, Prime Target explores a high-stakes narrative centered around Edward, who formulates a groundbreaking theory involving prime numbers. This theory holds the potential to unlock every computer system worldwide, drawing the attention of powerful and dangerous entities.
Despite warnings from his mentor, portrayed by David Morrissey of Daddy Issues fame, Edward plunges into a perilous quest to decode hidden government secrets. Alongside him is Taylah Sanders, a national security agent played by Quintessa Swindell, who has been discreetly protecting Edward.
The series promises thrilling action, mystery, and a profound storyline representing LGBTQ+ characters authentically. Edward's queerness is depicted as an intrinsic part of his identity, rather than a focal point, providing meaningful representation without overt exposition.
"For me, taking on a role like Edward was exciting because it was unlike anything I had done before," Woodall shared. "I've played characters who are outgoing and charming, but Edward is a departure from that. He's introverted and prefers logic over social interaction. Exploring such a character was a new and intriguing experience for me."
Swindell expressed admiration for the nuanced portrayal of Edward's queerness, noting, "It's refreshing to see LGBTQ+ characters who are defined by their intelligence and personal challenges rather than their sexuality alone."
While Woodall's portrayal of Edward marks a pivotal moment in his career, it's not his first venture into queer roles. Fans of The White Lotus might recall the buzz surrounding his portrayal of Jack, the audacious "nephew" of Quentin, played by Tom Hollander. The series, known for its audacious twists, revealed Jack and Quentin were romantically involved, causing a stir among viewers.
Reflecting on that role, Woodall remarked, "Participating in such a groundbreaking narrative with Mike White was surreal and exhilarating. There were no reservations about the controversial scenes because they served the story so well."
Following The White Lotus, Woodall starred in the heartwarming Netflix adaptation One Day and is set to appear alongside Renée Zellweger in the upcoming Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.
As anticipation builds for Prime Target, audiences can look forward to a series that combines thrilling drama with meaningful discourse on identity, offering a fresh perspective on LGBTQ+ narratives in media.
Prime Target is available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting January 22. Join the discussion and share your thoughts in the comments below, adhering to community guidelines for respectful engagement.
