Excitement is brewing among fans of the film adaptation of Wicked as rumors circulate about a potentially revealing scene featuring stars Jonathan Bailey and Ethan Slater. According to whispers from the set, the two actors filmed a sequence where they dramatically "rip their shirts off," although this moment was ultimately left out of the final cut of the first film. However, speculation suggests it could resurface in the highly anticipated second installment, Wicked: For Good.
The buzz began when Bowen Yang, a supporting cast member, dropped hints about the scene during an interview. He shared that several scenes were shot to illustrate the deepening friendships between the main characters: Fiyero (Bailey), Boq (Slater), Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo), and Glinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande). These scenes were meant to showcase the camaraderie between the characters as they bonded and enjoyed each other's company.
Yang recalled the filming of a montage that occurred after the iconic "Popular" sequence. The montage aimed to depict Fiyero, Glinda, Elphaba, Nessarose, and Boq as a united group, experiencing carefree moments together. "They shot a whole montage after 'Popular' just to show the audience: these are all friends now," Yang explained. "Fieryo, Glinda, Elphaba, Nessa, and Boq, the five of them, running around in the fields, hanging out."
One of the more talked-about moments happened during an outdoor shoot in a London park. Paparazzi managed to capture images of Bailey and Slater's characters, Fiyero and Boq, as they casually removed their shirts. Yang recounted, "And so you were supposed to see Jonathan Bailey in his full shirtless glory, like flexing. And then Boq, in the story of the movie, being insecure and wanting to look hot too, takes his shirt off. But then it’s like, ‘wait, Ethan’s got a great body’."
Despite the scene not making it into the first film, fans were vocal about their disappointment. They were eager to see these actors in a different light, showcasing their physical transformations and adding another layer to their characters.
The topic made its way to the red carpet, where Grande and Erivo were asked by Entertainment Tonight about the possibility of including the scene as an extra or in upcoming releases. Grande cryptically noted, "I can’t speak for Jon [M. Chu, the director], but all I can say is, you never know. There’s still a whole other movie."
Erivo added her own playful tease: "You don’t need it yet! Listen, just wait. Patience. Things come to those who wait."
Director Jon M. Chu has also addressed the curiosity surrounding the scene. He expressed that while the scene could potentially appear in Wicked: For Good, it would depend on how it fits within the overall narrative. "People have been harassing me about this scene," Chu admitted, indicating the level of interest and enthusiasm it has generated. Nevertheless, he emphasized the importance of ensuring the scene aligns with the film's direction and story.
For now, fans are left to speculate and hope that they might eventually see this scene. The anticipation adds another layer of excitement as the release date for the second film, set for November 21, 2025, draws nearer. Until then, the fandom is left in suspense, eagerly awaiting what surprises the continuation of Wicked holds.
With the film still in development, the possibility remains that fans will get to enjoy this shirtless spectacle, potentially adding a memorable moment to the beloved story of Wicked. Until then, patience and anticipation are key as audiences await the next chapter in this magical saga.
