Leo Aces Speaks Out Against Discrimination Faced by Trans Teen with Cerebral Palsy
Trans activist Leo Aces has recently raised his voice against what he describes as the "toxic transphobia and ableism" encountered by a transgender teenager named Micah Leroy. After Micah shared his transition journey online, his video went viral, drawing the attention of both supporters and detractors.
The video, which Micah posted earlier this month, highlighted his transition updates and personal milestones. As someone living with cerebral palsy (CP), Micah courageously shared his experiences with the world, hoping to foster understanding and acceptance. However, the reaction to his video was mixed, with some anti-trans and right-wing activists targeting him with negativity and harassment.
Leo Aces, who is a disability awareness speaker and a trans man with CP himself, expressed his dismay at the hostile treatment Micah received. Speaking passionately about the issue, Leo emphasized the need for greater empathy and understanding for individuals at the intersection of disability and gender identity.
"Talking from personal experience as an activist and awareness speaker, who is also a trans man with cerebral palsy, I am horrified by the overall reaction Micah’s video has received," Aces stated. According to him, the timing of Micah’s post coincided with recent changes in social media policies, leading to a "toxic storm of transphobia and ableism."
Leo Aces points out that Meta’s recent decision to prioritize "free speech" over fact-checking content on its platforms may have contributed to the increase in harmful rhetoric. This policy change, announced by Meta’s chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, has sparked concern among activists who worry it may exacerbate the spread of misinformation and hate speech.
Aces further noted, "Micah’s video provides a catalyst for a much larger conversation," highlighting the societal challenges faced by individuals with both physical disabilities and diverse gender identities. He explained, "The visibility of physical disability and gender identity can attract controversy because of the systemic notion that disabled people have less agency."
Leo shared his personal experiences of feeling like a commodity rather than an autonomous individual. "There have been many instances in my life where I feel I am considered more of a commodity rather than an autonomic individual. I face this attitude in daily life," he explained. Aces recounted how people have questioned his choice to embrace his gender identity, asking whether dealing with cerebral palsy alone was not "enough."
"In relation to my gender identity, people have asked: 'Don’t you have enough to contend with?' This is referencing that my CP must make me ‘different enough’, so why would I ‘choose’ to segregate myself further? The reality is, as the queer community and allies know, we haven’t ‘chosen’ to be trans any more than we ‘chose’ to be disabled," Aces asserted.
Despite the negativity, Aces stands firmly by Micah and others in the trans and disabled communities, emphasizing the importance of visibility and solidarity. "I wholeheartedly stand by Micah for sharing his transition and hope that his courageous act helps other disabled trans+ and non-binary folk," he stated, voicing his support for those who dare to live authentically.
Cerebral palsy, a group of conditions affecting movement and coordination, can have varying impacts on individuals. According to healthcare sources, while some people with CP may have intellectual disabilities, many live without cognitive impairments, highlighting the diverse experiences within the CP community.
As the conversation around disability and gender identity continues, advocates like Leo Aces remain committed to challenging stereotypes and discrimination. Through sharing their stories and standing in solidarity, they aim to create a more inclusive and understanding world for all.
